What Is It?
Morgan's first supercar, the Aero 8, was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2000 by Charles Morgan. In his words, it was "the result of the biggest development project ever undertaken by the Morgan Motor Company." It was the result of many years of hard work, a development programme that included racing in the FIA GT series, and a partnership with BMW.

The car's design resembled Morgans pre-war sports cars. The bonded aluminium chassis has elements of an ash frame to provide a link to the more traditional vehicles. It was designed by Chris Lawrence, who had a long-standing relationship with Morgan and included many features of racing cars of the time. Items such as in-board shock absorbers, double wishbones, a flat floor, centre lock magnesium wheels, rose-jointed suspension and other elements were included providing significant handling improvements over previous models. It featured large, valanced front fenders with round, incorporated headlights. At the front, the tilted radiator grille was curved, giving the vehicle an old-school appearance. In addition, the engine compartment was narrow and flanked by the fenders' curvatures that stretched along the bodywork. The rear quarter panels sported an elongated shape at the back and flanked a sloped rear end.

The interior featured a turned aluminium dashboard, an unusual asymmetric design, and a custom-made Mulberry case that could be used as a removable glovebox. It also nodded to modern services such as cruise control, air conditioning, and a heated windscreen. Fronting the driver was an instrument panel that sported the speedo, rev counter, and a couple of other gauges. This minimalist design was focused on one thing: the driver's pleasure.

Under the bonnet, Morgan installed a 4.4-litre BMW engine producing 286 bhp on the newly developed aluminium chassis, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Thus, the Aero 8 stepped into supercar territory thanks to the 4.8 seconds needed to get from 0 to 62 mph and its 160 mph top speed.
